White noise to combat tinnitus during your cruise

Tinnitus is a very serious condition.

Millions of people in the world suffer from a serious condition known as tinnitus.

There are two kinds of tinnitus.

Subjective tinnitus is tinnitus only you can hear. This is the most common type of tinnitus. It can be caused by ear problems in your outer, middle or inner ear. It also can be caused by problems with the hearing (auditory) nerves or the part of your brain that interprets nerve signals as sound (auditory pathways).

Objective tinnitus is tinnitus your doctor can hear when he or she does an examination. This rare type of tinnitus may be caused by a blood vessel problem, a middle ear bone condition or muscle contractions.

Medical researchers say that this incurable condition is due to hearing loss, yet much is to be learned about it.

The number one disability that members of the military get compensation from the VA is related to hearing loss!

Hearing aids can be of help, yet many cruise passengers use “white noise” to trick their brains not hear the loud tones, ringing, whistles or banging noises of tinnitus.

There are white noise machines that you can buy online for both home and cruise use.

Clearly the sound of the ocean can help lessen your tinnitus symptoms if you are fortunate enough to afford a balcony cabin.

Unfortunately we all know cruise lines don’t like you keeping your balcony door open!

I guess you could sleep under the stars on deck, which might even be romantic when sailing with a loved one. Just have some blankets at hand if it gets chilly at 2 a.m.

For those of you who suffer from tinnitus like I do, my heart goes out to you.

Over the last few years, I’ve learned how to manage the tinnitus and my VA-provided hearing aids help me out quite a lot.

The story below from Science.com documents new discoveries regarding tinnitus, yet a cure may be years away.
