First, some history.
I’m a U.S. Navy veteran and was fortunate to sail to Italy, Spain, France, Gibraltar, however I never visited Germany, Austria or Hungary.
Recently I was given the opportunity to sail on the AmaWaterways AmaMagna and was overwhelmed by the ship, the crew, the food, the free excursions, the free onboard wellness program and so much more.
I flew out from my hometown of Jacksonville, Fl to Munich and was greeted right outside of baggage claim by a friendly AmaWaterways staff member, and shortly thereafter was taken to the Vilshofen cruise port. I was able to board immediately and cabin 203 on the main deck was waiting for me!
Walk with me on a short tour of the AmaMagna.
One of the main features of the AmaWaterways AmaMagna is the free Wellness Program onboard!
One of the questions I’ve been asked is, “Hey Scott, what kind of entertainment was on the AmaMagna?” Well, here’s a video of Anna and Richard playing one of my favorite songs in the main lounge onboard!
The Captain was very kind to give me a tour of the bridge of the AmaMagna. As a Navy veteran, I had a lot of questions and we enjoyed our time together talking about cruising.

Here was the itinerary:
The MS AmaMagna offers an 8-day Danube cruise from Vilshofen to Budapest, visiting cities like Passau, Melk, Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest, with activities including wine tasting, river cruises, hiking, and biking.
Here’s a more detailed look at the itinerary:
- Day 1: Embarkation in Vilshofen, Germany.
- Day 2: Passau, Germany: Explore the city’s Gothic and Italian Baroque architecture, including St. Stephen’s Cathedral.
- Day 3: Melk Abbey and Vienna: Visit the 900-year-old Melk Abbey and explore Vienna’s Opera House and Schönbrunn Palace.
- Day 4: Bratislava, Slovakia: Enjoy a walking tour of the Coronation City of Kings or a hike to Bratislava Castle.
- Day 5: Dürnstein, Austria: Explore the town with a walking tour, a tour of Dürnstein Apricots and Sweets, or a hike to the Dürnstein Fortress.
- Day 6: Scenic cruising and Budapest, Hungary: Enjoy the views of the Danube River and prepare for disembarkation in Budapest.
- Day 7: Budapest: Explore the city with a Queen of the Danube tour, a Castle Hill hike, or a scenic cruising.
- Day 8: Disembarkation in Budapest.
The AmaMagna provides free laundry service daily, however if you prefer to do your own laundry, this video will provide some details…and yes, it’s free!
Another one of the highlights of the cruise was the Farewell Party hosted by the Captain.
Disembarkation Day is always the saddest day of a cruise, but here’s a helpful video for you.
Many thanks to the entire crew, shore excursion staff, and management of AmaWaterways AmaMagna. I have memories for a lifetime!
