Cancun Riviera Maya increase Health Protocols

Cancun

As the Omicron variant of COVID-19 rages on, Cancun and Riviera Maya officials are working hard to keep tourists healthy.

RivieraMayaNews.com is reporting, “With zero cases of Omicron in the state of Quintana Roo, the governor is asking people to take precautions and continue with health protocols. His message came after 50 samples were recently sent for Omicron testing.

According to Alejandra Aguirre Crespo, the Secretary of Health, a total of 50 samples were sent to the National Institute of Epidemiological Reference and Diagnosis (INDRE) to determine if covid-19-positive people were infected with the Omicron variant.

Crespo said that the Institute confirmed that all 50 samples were of the covid-19 Delta variant.

With this, governor Carlos Joaquin has reported an increase in the strengthening of epidemiological surveillance. He said a specialized surveillance system exclusively for hotels has been installed around the state so that timely detection can be made.

He also said that sanitary filters were installed in tourist destinations such as the Cancun Hotel Zone, where an average of 2,500 people a day pass through. He added that in the case of the Cancun Airport, health protocols established by national and international authorities will continue as they always have since the beginning of the pandemic.

Joaquin says the State Government, through the Ministry of Health, has reinforced the sanitary protocols and surveillance actions throughout the state, mainly in hospitals, seaports, airports and points with the greatest influx of people.

He reiterated that the state will not lower its guard in the face of the pandemic, stressing the importance of safeguarding the lives of both residents and visitors to the state.

“Quintana Roo is among the main destinations for international tourists, which means more economic growth and job recovery, however, we must reinforce the call not to lower our guard, to maintain discipline in compliance with hygiene habits and respect the epidemiological lights and the activities allowed,” he stressed.

Although the state is currently free of the Omicron variant, he cautioned about the complexity of the holiday season. “Given the effects that the world is witnessing by the new variant of covid-19, Omicron, which, unlike previous strains, is transmitted much faster,” he said stating that “an additional complexity is added, which is the holiday season in which people travel more and more parties are organized and social coexistence is more intense, which increases the risk of contagion.

“In this context, European countries are returning to confinement and resuming restrictive sanitary measures. Therefore, the World Health Organization has stated the risks involved in holding parties and meetings,” he said adding that for the upcoming week, the state of Quintana Roo will remain in a green epidemiological light.”
