Cancun moves to green on Covid traffic light system

Over the last 15 months, I’ve enjoyed my visits to TRS Coral, Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres, TRS Yucatán and Grand Palladium Riviera Maya. During those visits, the so-called Covid traffic light system told locals and tourists that Covid levels were high. Now, RivieraMayaNews.com is reporting that Cancun and Riviera Maya have moved into the green level!

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The northern region of Quintana Roo will be moved ahead to a green epidemiological light for the week of October 11. Governor Carlos Joaquin said that only the north will move to green and that the southern region will remain yellow due to a slight increase in infections.

Joaquin says that moving to green does not mean the pandemic has ended, only that the contagion curve has decreased to .083 with a hospital occupancy of 10 percent.

He detailed that Cozumel has recorded a decrease of 47%, Cancun (Benito Juárez) had decreased 46%, the municipality of Puerto Morelos 43%, José María Morelos 40%, the municipality of Isla Mujeres 29%, Tulum 28%, Othón P. Blanco 25%, Bacalar 23%, Playa del Carmen (Solidaridad) 16% and the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas 11%.”

“The only increase has been in Felipe Carrillo Puerto with 118 percent.

The southern region remains yellow after its contagion rate went from 0.93 to 0.95, with 7 percent hospital occupancy, 18 percent of which, are patients beds with a ventilator. Carlos Joaquín did say that the region has the conditions necessary to also reach green.

Next week, an update will be made to the maximum capacity rates for various businesses and services now that the north is in the green. One of the biggest increases will be hotels and restaurants, which as of October 11, will be permitted an 80 percent occupancy rate.

The 80 percent capacity will also apply to historical sites, theme parks, golf courses and tourist services as well as public spaces, theaters and shopping centers.”

This news is great for tourists and resorts in Cancun! I look forward to returning to Cancun before the end of 2021!
