Hurricane season is quickly arriving, but recent news reports state this year may be milder than years past.
According to FoxNews.com, “The pre-season forecast from Colorado State University’s Tropical Meteorology Project calls for 13 named storms, of which 5 are predicted to strengthen into hurricanes, with 2 becoming major storms that are Category 3 or higher.
Hurricane researchers note that sea surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic are “slightly below normal,” and the far North Atlantic is “anomalously cool.” A weaker El Niño may also strengthen this summer into the fall.”
It always amazes me how meteorologists can try to predict weather patterns so far in the future when they can’t accurately predict the weather for the next day!
Hurricane season runs from June 1st through Nov 30th, but please remember that cruise lines will do everything humanly possible to keep their guests, crew and their very expensive ships out of harms way.
Speaking as a U.S.Navy veteran, I know first hand that the weather can change at a moments notice. Once my ship was being bounced around in 40 foot seas with wind speeds over 30 knots! Not fun!
Over the last few years, we have heard about cruise ships sailing through some dangerous weather.
Modern satellites help cruise lines keep a tab on the weather, but localized storms can pop up quickly and be severe. As in the recent case of the Viking Sky, low oil pressure in the engines may have caused their mishap at sea. Rare shipboard fires or other mechanical issues can cause problems when on your cruise vacation.
Don’t be afraid to cruise during hurricane season. Just be sure to purchase travel insurance, bring some over the counter medicines to calm your stomach, and limit the amount of alcohol you drink!
Keep your stomach full and try to avoid greasy dishes that can make it more likely you will experience a queasy stomach.
